MALMÖ FOTOBIENNAL | CONTEMPORARY ACTIVISM

THE 2015 EDITION OF MALMÖ FOTOBIENNAL IS NOW OVER…WE WANT TO THANK THE ARTIST AND GALLERIES INVOLVED. IT HAS BEEN GREAT WORKING WITH YOU ALL! SEE YOU ALL SOON: NEXT BIENALE IN PLANNED FOR 2017!

From the 11th to the 20th of september, galleries, museums and alternative spaces in Malmö hosted over 40 exhibtions presenting over 50 international artists and photographers exhibitions. Art space in Copenhagen, Lund and Helsinborg were represented as well with major exhibitions and events. This year we had a new focus and have chosen to highlight the work of contemporary artists who use photography not only artistically, but in social and political contexts.
____
During the ten days of the biennial, we created a forum to broaden the discussion on the enhanced role of photography in society and to promote critical dialogue about photography and activism.

HIGHLIGHTING CONTEMPORARY ACTIVISM

The leading theme of the biennale is “Contemporary Activism”. You are welcome to join us at the free seminar on sunday, 13 september 2015. >Read more hereContemporary activism is about the urge to expose things as they are, about taking responsibility and engaging into the communities. The work presented in the biennale are both dealing with global issues and disclosing introspective photographic projects showing us a wide spectrum of personal engagement.

Zanele Muholi | We live in fear

favicon
Zanele Muholi project “We live is fear” is one of the highlight of the biennale. Zanele´s body of work is focusing on gender and women rights in today’s South African society. The exhibition at the photo gallery Vasli Souza, will open the biennale on the 11th of September in the presence of the artist.

Tomáš Rafa | Walls of Sports

favicon
Another artist we want to highlight is Tomáš Rafa “Walls of Sports” as an inspiring example of the desire to help a stranger in need and to extend a hand to someone who is living under entirely different conditions than yourself. The documentation relating to the project Walls of Sports shows us another way, a better way, actual is possible.

Kent Klich | Black Friday

favicon
Photographer Kent Klich’s new project Black Friday is the third part of his ongoing depiction – books, video installations and exhibitions – of life in the Gaza Strip. Since the beginning of the 21st century he has worked with both his own photography and a kind of investigation of images of the citizens of Gaza and their “video diaries” filmed with mobile phones. His pictures can be seen as a reaction to all the photos of catastrophic scenes from the area that reach us via the mass media – the constant press photos of acts of violence. Black Friday, which is a joint project with Amnesty International and Forensic Architecture, depicts the attack on the city of Rafah the 1st of August 2014, and its aftermath.

ALBA ZARI AND SHARON RITOSSA | PLACES

favicon
(…)The pictures talk about the selection of technology gestures. The project wants to think about the power and the violence of images, and their capacity to show the truth and the way to produce it. This project has been realized by two women, a self portrait of two photographers who wants to reflect about the role of women in the IS.(…)

LAURENCE RASTI | There are no homosexuals in Iran

favicon
September 24, 2007 at Columbia University, former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said, “In Iran, we do not have homosexuals like in your country. » While today some Occidental countries accept gays and lesbians marriages, in Iran, homosexuality is still punishable by death. This sanction prohibits homosexuals to live their sexuality.(…)

Naomi Soto | Grow Heathrow

favicon
The long term debate around London’s aviation capacity was reopened in October 2013 when the government resurrected the unpopular Heathrow’s third runway project. Four months later Grow Heathrow, a self sufficient community established by environmental activists, celebrated its third anniversary as a symbol of the local resistance against the airport’s expansion.(…)
